Writer's Block

Migraine or Myth?

Every day I hear an author ask, pine over, complain about, or inquire after the term "Writer's Block." For a while, I actually considered this a real thing. However, based on my own lack of same, and my understanding of the human psyche, I have come to a new conclusion: Writer's Block does not exist.

"How can you be so sure, William? After all, you say you have never experienced it."

Well, readers, writer's block is not the problem. Stress, a busy life, overwhelmed thoughts, and family or friends interrupting your flow are all the blame, here. It is not that you have some mysterious block that is disabling your ability to form words. It is that you just have too much going on.

If you dedicate time to write every day, do you think that could be a part of the problem? Writing is a job, sure, but when a person is forcing themselves to be creative when there are other things on their mind, do you truly believe they will enable their creative juices?

Writer's block is the product of a stressful mind. If you can clear your mind, and I don't recommend alcohol or drugs for this as a personal point of view, and you can relax enough to realize that you are under deadlines you imposed, you will feel that creativity return.

When you begin to worry about an arbitrary and oblique term that truly has power on you if you believe it to be true, you will find yourself losing days, weeks, months, and perhaps even longer, in your book writing.

I advise you write when you want to, and do not write when you do not want to. Do not set deadlines because that just causes stress. Do not expect others to understand your own personal journey, and do it on your own terms. Nobody can tell you how or when to write better than you can.
